Recent studies have revealed that crows possess remarkable cognitive abilities, including an exceptional memory and the capacity to hold grudges for up to 17 years. This surprising discovery places crows among the most intelligent birds in the world, suggesting a surprising level of behavioural complexity.

Crows: Not Just Simple Observers

Crows are not mere observers of their environment. They have the ability to recognize and memorize threats. Moreover, these birds do not keep this vital information to themselves. Research shows that crows communicate perceived dangers to other members of their community, ensuring that threats are known and avoided.

The Mask Experiment: Memory and Social Transmission of Fear

A study conducted in 2006 aimed to test crow reactions to perceived threats. To do this, seven crows were temporarily captured by individuals wearing a mask that the birds perceived as threatening. The reactions of the crows on campus were then observed whenever the mask was worn. Over time, it was noted that the crows’ outrage reactions grew exponentially, with 47 out of 53 crows responding aggressively to the sight of the mask. This suggests not only an impressive memory but also the ability to communicate danger to other members of the species.

Crows’ Complex Social Structure and Intelligence

Further studies have revealed that crows live in complex social structures. These birds communicate through sounds and body language, signaling each other’s presence, indicating food sources, and even forming alliances against predators. This level of social interaction places crows among the few animal species capable of cultural transmission, i.e., sharing information from one generation to the next.
