South Carolina Research Center Reports Escaped Monkeys
On Wednesday night, 40 monkeys reportedly escaped from a research center in South Carolina. The escape occurred at Alpha Genesis, a company that specializes in primate products and bioresearch services.
Efforts to Recapture the Monkeys
Yemassee Police in Beaufort County are using thermal imaging cameras and setting traps in an effort to recapture the escaped animals. The Yemassee Sheriff’s Department has issued a warning for residents to secure their homes to prevent the monkeys from entering. They have also advised anyone who encounters a monkey to avoid interaction and immediately call 911.
About Alpha Genesis
Alpha Genesis conducts clinical trials involving monkeys, including treatments for brain diseases. The company claims to have one of the largest and most comprehensive primate laboratories in the United States, specifically designed for monkeys. While the breed of the escaped primates has not been specified, Alpha Genesis’ website states that they work with macaques and capuchin monkeys.
Uncertainty remains regarding the nature of studies the escaped monkeys were involved in or whether they were exposed to any diseases. The company has not yet responded to requests for comment on the escape.
Alpha Genesis and Monkey Island
In addition to their research center, Alpha Genesis has also won a federal contract to manage a colony of 3,500 monkeys on Morgan Island, South Carolina, popularly known as Monkey Island.
Previous Escapes
Primate escapes have occurred several times in Beaufort County. The Post and Courier newspaper reported instances in May this year and in 2016, when 19 monkeys escaped from the Alpha Genesis security zone but were subsequently recaptured.
