Nordic Countries Prepare Citizens for Potential Conflict Amid Russia-Ukraine Crisis
With the escalation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Norway, Sweden, and Finland have taken proactive steps to equip their citizens with knowledge on how to respond in case of emergencies. These Nordic nations have begun circulating informative brochures, detailing procedures for survival during a potential conflict.
Information Leaflets for Emergency Situations
According to reports by the BBC and the Kyiv Independent, the Swedish government has been mailing brochures to its citizens since Monday, addressing the “deteriorating security situation” in the wake of the Ukraine conflict. Finland and Norway have followed suit, with Helsinki opting for virtual brochures as a cost-saving measure, and Oslo distributing approximately 2.2 million brochures – one for every household in the country.
Leaflet Contents: Basic Survival Information
The leaflets, updated versions of previous editions, provide essential information about survival in war times, including details about food and medicine. The brochures reiterate that these Nordic countries are ready for “self-defense” should the need arise. A statement in the Stockholm brochure reads, “If Sweden is attacked by another country, we will never give up.”
Sweden and Finland Join NATO
In the aftermath of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, both Sweden and Finland decided to join NATO, renouncing their prior neutrality policies. This decision was driven by concerns about becoming potential targets of Russia’s expansionist ambitions. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zaharova and Russian President Vladimir Putin have warned Sweden and Finland respectively about their NATO membership, although the specifics of these threats remain unclear.
Increased Readiness of NATO
Since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, NATO’s military has been enhancing its capacity and readiness. Although a full confrontation between NATO and Russia has been avoided so far, there are increasing concerns that a larger conflict could still occur. Lithuania has already begun planning for mass civilian evacuations in the event of an armed conflict.
Various NATO commanders and alliance leaders have recently expressed their concerns about the potential dangers and impacts of such a war on Europe.
