European Countries to Reinforce Border Controls Ahead of Holidays
Several countries in Europe, including France, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden have announced that they will impose controls on their land borders in the lead up to the holiday season. These checks, largely aimed at Schengen member countries, will be implemented as a widespread measure to curb migration and increase security against organized crime threats.
The Dutch Response
As part of a broader initiative to enhance safety and order, the Dutch authorities plan to impose border checks for the next six months. The Netherlands is set to apply these controls at all its Schengen borders starting December 9, 2024. This measure follows a similar initiative by neighboring Germany.
Germany’s Border Controls
Earlier, the German authorities had decided to introduce border controls on their western and northern borders. This move was stated to be part of their efforts to combat illegal migration and cross-border crime. The introduction of these controls, especially on the previously “freest” borders, signifies a significant shift in the country’s approach to border management.
EU’s Stance on Border Controls
The European Union allows such measures when there are serious risks to public security or internal order, even in areas without controls. This provision has led to an increasing number of countries adopting stricter border control measures in recent times.
Impact on Schengen Borders
These increased controls and checks will undoubtedly impact the freedom of movement across Schengen borders. While the measures are primarily focused on enhancing public security, they also highlight the ongoing discussions and debates around migration and border control within the European Union.
