Global Reactions to the Likelihood of a Trump 2.0 Administration
US allies and adversaries are reacting to the possibility of a second Trump administration. Concerns arise from Western allies about potential changes in US foreign policy and relations with various nations. Trump promises to bring peace to Ukraine, end the Gaza war, restrict China’s trade practices, and enforce NATO allies’ “fair share” payment.
Trump’s First Term and NATO
Trump’s first term witnessed complicated relations with many European leaders, expressing contempt for the EU, the United Nations, NATO, and other institutions. Yet, he also worked on building good relations with leaders of America’s adversaries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. This approach differed significantly when President Biden took office, distancing himself from foreign autocrats and rekindling relations with democratic allies.
European Preference for Harris
A report by a European NGO revealed that most Europeans favored a Harris victory in the US presidential election. This view likely mirrors European leaders’ concerns about Trump’s opposition to US military aid to Ukraine.
Eastern European and Israeli Support for Trump
However, Trump’s return was predicted by Russians and respondents from several Eastern European countries, including Hungary. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a key Trump ally, was the first foreign leader to congratulate Trump. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, another key Trump ally, also showed preference for Trump over Harris.
Iran’s Hope for a Harris Victory
While Arab leaders in the Gulf hoped for Trump’s comeback due to their close relationship during his first term, Iranian leaders held an opposing view. New Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian hoped for a Harris victory to pave the way for a deal with the US that would lift some of the sanctions crippling Iran’s economy.
Global Response to Trump’s Potential Return
Even leaders who dislike Trump, such as Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, stated they would try to establish strong working relations with the new administration, acknowledging Trump’s “impressive electoral victory”.
