Youngest Russian Political Prisoner Loses Appeal
Arseniy Turbin, one of Russia’s youngest political prisoners, has lost his appeal to overturn a five-year prison sentence. Turbin was only 15 when he was arrested in 2023. Russian authorities accused him of supporting the Legion of Freedom for Russia, a paramilitary unit designated as a terrorist organization in Russia. The accusation came after he was found distributing anti-Putin leaflets in his school. Besides Turbin, eight other Russian minors have been detained for political reasons since the invasion of Ukraine began, according to human rights organization OVD-Info.
Turbin Denies Charges
Turbin has denied all charges, insisting that he only sought information about the Legion, but never attempted to join the group. His mother, Irina, remains steadfast in her belief in her son’s innocence. Irina expressed her disbelief and disappointment in the judge who passed the sentence.
Accusations Against Turbin
Investigators have accused Turbin of distributing leaflets criticising Russian President Vladimir Putin on behalf of the Legion. Turbin admitted to distributing the materials but denied receiving any instructions from anyone. His mother, Irina Turbina, has faced accusations from neighbours and co-workers who claim she raised a “terrorist”.
Turbin’s Activism
Turbin was vocal in his criticism of Putin and the invasion of Ukraine. He was active on social media, sharing content created by members of the Russian opposition. He also made and shared his own content, including a video of him protesting single-handedly in support of the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Raid and Interrogation
In August 2023, FSB agents raided his home in the small town of Livni, 450 kilometers south of Moscow. His electronic devices were confiscated, and he was charged with joining the Freedom Legion for Russia. Turbin’s mother regrets that no lawyer was present during the interrogations, and believes that the FSB forged a guilty plea from Turbin.
Detention and Treatment
After being under house arrest for several months, Turbin was transferred to a detention center in Moscow. His mother reported that her son has lost considerable weight due to stress and has become withdrawn. He was reportedly threatened and attacked by his cellmate.
Community Reaction
The community has reacted negatively towards Turbin and his family. His classmates confirmed that he often criticized Putin and Russia’s actions in Ukraine, but denied that he had joined any paramilitary group. However, his mother has been blamed for “raising a terrorist”. Irina maintains that those criticizing her have not experienced Russia’s corrupt judicial system themselves.
