Ukraine’s President Criticizes G20’s Silence on Russia’s Nuclear Stance
Ukraine’s President Volodimir Zelenski expressed disappointment over the lack of response from the G20 leaders regarding Russia’s updated nuclear doctrine that expands the potential use of nuclear weapons. During the G20 summit held in Brazil, Zelenski pointed out that the world’s 20 wealthiest nations did not have a robust strategy to address this issue.
Russian Nuclear Threat: An Irresponsible Attitude
According to Josep Borrell, the acting head of European diplomacy, Russia’s nuclear posturing is irresponsible. This sentiment was expressed following a recent meeting of the EU Council of Defense Ministers in Brussels. Borrell, who serves as the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, criticized Russia’s threat of nuclear escalation.
Putin’s Decree Raises Concerns
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently signed a decree that broadens the scope for using nuclear weapons. This move came on the 1,000th day of the offensive in Ukraine and after the United States authorized Kiev to launch strikes on Russian territory with American long-range ATACMS missiles. Borrell criticized Putin’s actions, saying that this is not the first time Putin has tried to create insecurity, such as by deploying North Korean troops to European territory.
Europe’s Stance on Nuclear Deterrence
Borrell stated that Europe strongly rejects discussions about nuclear deterrence at this juncture. He emphasized that the fate of Ukraine will determine the future of the European Union, underscoring the importance of the situation.
