Ukraine’s President Seeks Diplomatic End to War with Russia
Zelensky Calls for Diplomatic End to Conflict
Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky expressed a commitment to ending the war with Russia through diplomatic means. In a recent interview with a Russian-Ukrainian radio station, Zelensky emphasized the need to do everything possible to conclude the war in the coming year.
Russia Open to Negotiations
Russia’s representative to the United Nations in Geneva recently suggested that the country is open to negotiations to end the conflict. However, he clarified that Ukraine would have to acknowledge the realities on the ground, implying that Ukraine would have to give up four regions partially occupied and claimed by Russian forces.
Zelensky’s Stance on Territory
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Zelensky has consistently maintained that peace can only be achieved once all Russian forces are expelled and territories captured by Moscow, including Crimea, are returned to Ukraine. However, the return to Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders as of 1991 was not included in the “victory plan” recently presented by the President.
Expectations from the Trump Administration
Zelensky expressed optimism that the war would end sooner under the Trump administration, given its public commitment to ending the conflict rapidly. However, details about how this would be achieved have not been provided. The Ukrainian President also noted that existing US law prevented him from meeting Trump prior to his inauguration on January 20.
Current Situation in Eastern Ukraine
The situation in Eastern Ukraine continues to deteriorate with Moscow forces closing in on Kurahove, which houses a thermal power plant and is located just seven kilometers from Pokrovsk. This city has been a crucial logistical pillar for Ukraine during the conflict.
